The passenger seating area had a gift shop, a restaurant, restrooms (toilets), and any manner of seating areas and positions. Once again, I was struck by the ingenuity and ability of mankind when they work together to accomplish something far bigger than themselves that benefits so very many people who have come to rely on and expect such services! When will we in Nigeria come to realize that the ONLY way to move forward is to set aside our differences and work together?! In Nigeria, we easily and quickly state our differences and claim that Westerners have more mutually in common than Africans. Yet, I am coming to realize that this is an inaccurate perception on the part of Africans. Rather, the cultural differences are truly diverse! Chinese, Japanese, Indians (First Nation as they are now supposed to be called), Dutch, Italian, Danish, Kenyan, Sudanese, and pretty much any nationality you can think of, all set aside their differences to accomplish great things!
The past few days have been spent visiting with friends and lost acquaintances. I was privileged to spend time with some dear friends I lost touch with over the past years. To have a common bond and to so readily feel comfortable in the presence of people I have not seen in over 25 years is just amazing! There is this common bond with people who have shared a common life and experience. Few can relate to such experiences, and so when we meet again, we have a common bond that eludes most other friendships. Somehow, that shared African experience has bonded me to even those I have not met earlier in a way that surpasses expectations.

Mike I quote "the cultural differences are truly diverse! Chinese, Japanese, Indians (First Nation as they are now supposed to be called), Dutch, Italian, Danish, Kenyan, Sudanese, and pretty much any nationality you can think of, all set aside their differences to accomplish great things" . That's what America is all about Mike! We disagree, we debate and voice our differences loudly and clearly but that is what makes the USofA so GREAT. It's spelled FREEDOM. There is no fear of retaliation or having to bribe someone to cooperate. The USA has its internal problems and we're probably not terribly smart about our foreign policy but we're honest in our desire to help those who are oppressed. There has NEVER been a desire to occupy and conquer - only to help create freedom and some form of democratic society where men, women and children enjoy freedom and are treated with respect. It worked (at a great cost to every American) in South Korea, in Japan, in Germany and hopefully it will work in Iraq. The USA has never fought a war for the sake of a converting people to a certain religion because we know about and enjoy religious freedom in The States - we live in religious harmony. I didn't intend to get carried away but it just came naturally and flowed out of the keyboard without very many changes. Anyway, my young friend, I am sure that we will have much to talk about when you're back in MI. Enjoy your trip and the company of good friends. It's truly good friendship when you can pick up where you left off 25 years earlier. Drive carefully!

Mike, what a stark difference - the modest ferry boat in Nigeria compared to the enormous capability of the ferry you were recently on! Thank you for the wonderful pictures and thought provoking thoughts as you reconnect with friends and family.

With all due respect, I just can't help but respond to Case.
While Mike mused about Westerners in general, you quickly equate this with "the USofA". That kind of ethno-centric statement is precisely what so grates on the rest of the world. I would advise caution in that respect. It so happens that Mike's musings flowed out of a "Western" experience in Canada, which as of today -- insofar I know -- has not yet been taken over by "the USofA". I notice such things -- I'm Canadian ...
Secondly, I would not be so confidently stating that there "has NEVER been a desire to occupy and conquer" as if you know the motivations and intentions of all Americans past. Just doesn't seem wise ...
Third, could it just be possible that oil, the economy, and the dollar had at least something to do with the war in Iraq? If only the cause of freedom and democracy were the motivation, then why not involvement in the Sudan and untold other places? Perhaps they have less to offer; or rather, nothing that "the USofA" (and to be fair, other Western nations) need?
Last, it is not just about not being "terribly smart about ... foreign policy", though woefully inconsistent is a description I would probably add: it is also about domestic policies that distinctly lacks compassion for the poor and underprivileged, in my opinion. Domestic policies, furthermore, that deals rather strangely, too, with the realities of violence, guns, and drugs, to name just a few issues.
Let's keep our thinking caps on firmly ...
For what it is worth ...
